The government announced on Monday the 12th of September that New Zealand will mark the passing of Queen Elizabeth II with a State Memorial Service and one-off public holiday on Monday 26th September.
Normal rules for working and paying employees on public holidays will apply.
This is an unprecedented situation for payroll, as under normal circumstances, there would be plenty of notice of a change to legislation.
Some key areas to think about are:
1. Contacting payroll provider to understand how the new one-off public holiday will be managed in the software. We have already been notified by Crystal payroll and Paysauce that they have made the changes in their payroll to deal with this one off public holiday.
2. Recognising which employee's normal working day is a Monday and will be affected by the new one-off public holiday. It is normal part of our payroll process to check who did and did not work on a public holiday as any day of the week can be part of the normal roster.
3. Getting prepared if Pay Day is a Monday and employees may be required to be paid earlier. This does not apply to any of our clients as the earliest payday is Tuesday.
Be sure to take some time out to prepare to ensure your pay runs smoothly. Ask for help if you need it and Keep calm and carry on! #payrollnz #publicholiday #queensmemorialday
